Give the government your view on proposals for a new council for East Sussex

Houses of Parliament
The Government has launched its consultation on proposals for local government in East Sussex. They are consulting on two options:

  • One East Sussex – a single unitary authority based on the existing boundaries of East Sussex, with Brighton & Hove to remain unchanged.
  • Five unitary authorities that divide the whole of Sussex into new areas, with parts of East Sussex either moved into Brighton & Hove or into a new shared council with areas of West Sussex.

This is your chance to influence what councils look like in East Sussex and how they deliver services in the future.

The consultation asks for views on whether the proposals will create councils that are good value for money, deliver high-quality services, reflect local needs, and support stronger community engagement.

We believe that our proposal for One East Sussex offers the best outcomes for our partners and our residents. Developed collaboratively by all district and borough councils in East Sussex, One East Sussex shows that a single unitary authority council, on the existing East Sussex footprint would be simpler for residents, would save £64 million over its first five years and would avoid the extra complexity of splitting up existing services.

The One East Sussex proposal is built on solid foundations, because the existing councils already work closely together and with other partners. It would be shaped by everyone in East Sussex, with a commitment to transform and develop services in discussion with all the county’s communities.

Are you recycling right?

An aninated gif displaying household items that can and can't be recycled
We all want to do our bit for the environment, but when it comes to recycling it’s easy to get confused.

For example, did you know you can now recycle toothpaste tubes, but you can’t recycle old clothes or textiles? Or that when enough of the wrong items go in our recycling bins the whole load may be treated as waste?

A simple rule to follow is ‘keep it clean, dry and loose’. That means:

  • removing food from packaging such as glass jars, yoghurt pots and meat trays
  • emptying liquids from bottles
  • placing items loose in the bin, not in black bin bags. This is so waste operatives can quickly see if the items are suitable for recycling

And it’s also important to remember that hazardous items should never go in any bin. This includes vapes and batteries.

If you live in Wealden, Hastings, or Rother, you can leave vapes, batteries and small electrical items in a bag on top of your wheelie bin for kerbside collection. In other areas, please take hazardous and electrical items to takeback schemes or local recycling centres.

Check which items you can and can’t recycle with our new guide available via the button below!
