Join us this January for uplifting, hands-on Ukrainian cultural experiences led by Ukrainian artists and teachers who have lived through the war and are now rebuilding community through creativity. Whether you’re interested in art, folklore, wellbeing or simply supporting Lewes’ Ukrainian community, these workshops offer a unique chance to learn, create and connect!
🎨 Samchykivka Folk-Art Workshop Sunday 18 January 09.50–11.10 or 13.00–14.20
Learn one of Ukraine’s most joyful and symbolic artistic traditions. Using bold colours and protective folk motifs, you’ll create your own artwork inspired by the village of Samchyky — the birthplace of Samchykivka. Make your own traditional Travnytsia doll — a fragrant handmade talisman filled with herbs, flowers and blessings for the home. This meditative craft has been passed down through generations and offers a calming, meaningful experience for adults and teens. Strong roots, a Ukrainian Family, Interrupted 11.20–12.30 – Sunday 18 January
Acclaimed Ukrainian cook and writer Olia Hercules, renowned Ukrainian-born cook, writer and co-founder of #CookForUkraine will talk about her powerful new book Strong Roots braids four generations of family history with the textures and tastes of Ukrainian cooking — from Stalin-era repression and forced deportations to the 2022 occupation of her parents’ hometown. Volya Voices – Traditional Ukrainian Choir – Sunday 18th January 11.00am – 11.20am & 12.25pm -12.45pm FREE OF CHARGE- For attendees before and after the talk by Olia Herciles and before Diana Yeliseieva’s workshop
Experience the moving harmonies of Volya Voices, a traditional Ukrainian choir whose performances blend cultural pride, resilience and gratitude through song. Formed to share the beauty of Ukrainian folk music with communities across the UK, the choir performs both authentic Ukrainian traditional pieces and English-language songs, arranged to express connection, friendship and hope. Their music honours Ukraine’s heritage while creating a bridge of solidarity with audiences here in Sussex.
