Understanding Self-Harm in Children and Young People using the East Sussex Toolkit |
In East Sussex, recent data showed that around a third of secondary age children have intentionally hurt themselves. In primary schools the numbers are increasing. ‘Self-harm, often called self-injury, is a serious mental health condition where a person intentionally harms their own body and may include acts such as cutting, scratching, burning, biting, and scalding. It may also include the ingestion of objects or substances in order to deliberately injure oneself to help manage feelings of emotional pain, anger, and frustration’ (Anna Freud Centre 2025).
