South East Water update on water resources

As ongoing dry weather continues to put pressure on local water supplies, businesses across Sussex are being advised of potential new water saving measures announced by South East Water.

South East Water has submitted an application to the Government for a Non-Essential Use Ban (NEUB), which would apply to commercial and non-household water use if approved by the Secretary of State.

It is important to note, this is currently an application only. Even if granted, it will only be implemented if the drought situation in Sussex becomes more severe.

The measures have been proposed because Sussex has experienced an exceptionally dry period. According to South East Water, the county received just over 56% of its expected rainfall between March and August, while summer 2026 was the hottest on record. As a result, levels in reservoirs – particularly Ardingly – are extremely low.

This update is particularly important for businesses, as the proposed Non-Essential Use Ban could affect a range of activities that rely on mains water. If approved, restrictions could include:

  • watering plants at commercial premises
  • cleaning vehicles
  • filling or maintaining non-domestic pools and ponds
  • washing buildings and windows
  • dust suppression
  • and certain industrial cleaning activities.

Businesses that use water as part of their day-to-day operations should review the proposals and consider how any future restrictions could affect them.

South East Water says its priority is to ensure there is enough water available for essential daily needs while protecting the environment.

Comments and objections are to be made to DEFRA by 9 October 2026. For  further information visit: business.southeastwater.co.uk/help/non-essential-use-ban/
