This introductory session will highlight the importance of professionals warning signs of both domestic abuse and suicidality and offer effective support that addresses co-occurring issues like poor mental health and substance use, both of which make staying safe challenging.

A report by the National Police Chiefs’ Council in March 2024, and another by Safe Lives in March 2025 highlighted that more people in the UK are dying by suicide following domestic abuse than are being killed by a current or former partner. The majority of victims are women, and the majority of perpetrators are male.

It’s not just survivors who are at risk. Research shows that individuals who use abusive behaviours and those who are perpetrators of domestic abuse murders, are also at heightened risk for suicide.

The session will be led by Dan King and Charlotte Lench.

Dan King is a Senior Training and Development Consultant for Adult Social Care, with a specialism in Safeguarding. He leads on the delivery of the children and adult focussed, multi-agency Coercion and Control training.

Charlotte Lench is a Senior Practitioner – Domestic Abuse Theme – within our SWIFT, Specialist Family Service. This service works with families where domestic abuse is of significant concern to children or young people in the family and recognises that where domestic abuse takes place, it does so in the context of a child’s family network and impacts on all family members.
