Organisation Aradhana Kothari, Dad La Soul

Backstage Crew

Backstage Crew Volunteer Role Description

Purpose of the role

As a Backstage Crew, you help make our sessions feel warm, safe and welcoming from the moment people arrive.

You help the session run smoothly. You help dads, male carers and children settle in quickly and feel like they belong.

For some families, that matters more than you might think.

What you’ll be doing

This role is about making the room work.

It is noticing who looks comfortable, who looks awkward, and who might need a friendly word before they drift back out the door. It is helping shape the atmosphere so people can relax into it.

Think of it like this. If this were Glastonbury, you would be the one making sure the sound system was sorted, the vibe was right, and the room was ready to hit properly the second people walked in. Not flashy. Just essential. The stuff people might not always see, but always matters.

You will:

  • Set up activities before each session and help pack down afterwards
  • Welcome dads, male carers and children as they arrive
Manage registration and ticket check-in using our simple app and check-in sheet
  • Be a warm, calm and reliable presence throughout the session
Help conversations start naturally and support connection between families
  • Encourage inclusive participation so nobody feels left out or out of place
  • Keep an eye on how the session is going and flag any concerns to the team
  • Share highlights, feedback and ideas after the session to help us keep improving

What we’re looking for:

  • You do not need to be the loudest person in the room.
  • You do not need a load of qualifications.
  • You do not need to have fatherhood all figured out.
  • We’re looking for someone who is good with people, steady under pressure, and happy to muck in.
  • Someone who can help a room feel less awkward.
  • Someone who can spot when a dad looks unsure.
  • Someone who understands that feeling welcome is not a small thing.

You might be a good fit if you are:

  • Warm and welcoming
  • Comfortable chatting with adults and children
  • A good listener
  • Reliable and consistent
  • Organised without being rigid
  • Flexible and happy working as part of a team
  • Calm, observant, and able to read the room
  • Genuinely interested in creating positive spaces for fathers and families

What you’ll gain:

  • You will gain more than event experience.
  • You will be part of something real. Something useful. Something that helps change the feel of fatherhood for other men.
  • Hands-on experience in community engagement
Experience supporting informal and inclusive group spaces
Greater confidence working with diverse groups of adults and children
  • A supportive team who will genuinely value your contribution
  • The chance to be part of a growing movement changing the conversation around fatherhood and men’s wellbeing
  • A reference for future volunteering, employment or study, where relevant
  • Access to all other sessions for free if you volunteer for more than 6 sessions a year
  • You will also help build the kind of space many of us wish had existed sooner.

Who this role is great for:

  • Dads who enjoy meeting and connecting with other dads
  • Anyone interested in supporting community events
  • People who want to build confidence in hosting or facilitating
  • Anyone who wants to contribute to a positive space for fathers and families
  • Anyone aged 18 or over

The impact:

  • Your support helps create spaces where dads feel less alone, families feel welcomed, and children see men show up, join in, listen, play and connect.
  • That might sound simple. It is not.
  • Sometimes the biggest thing you can give someone is a room they do not have to brace themselves for.
  • Time commitment and accessibility
  • Approximately 2 to 3 hours per event
  • Events run monthly on Saturday mornings
  • Flexible commitment, with volunteers able to sign up for sessions that suit their availability
  • All reasonable adjustments made based on site location
    Reasonable expenses reimbursed

Location:

Sessions now running in Worthing, Brighton and Tunbridge Wells

Upcoming venues: Eastbourne (July 26) and Lewes (September 26)
